By the end of the 1950s North America had become Morgan’s largest market, accounting for two-thirds of all new car sales globally with the Plus 4 and 4/4 models both proving extremely popular in the United States. Unfortunately, as would become a theme of Morgan in the United States, regulation changes all but ended exports to the United States in 1968.
Such strong US interest in Morgan meant that the new Morgan Plus 8 was converted to run on propane to meet emissions regulations and allow US customers to continue importing Morgan sports cars between 1974 and 1992. In 1992 the V8 engine used in the Plus 8 was re-certified and US customers could once again import gasoline Morgan vehicles. In 2000, the Aero 8 was introduced and immediately became a hit in the United States with the series 2 being developed specifically for sale across the Atlantic.
Having enjoyed export success to the country for decades, changes to regulations in 2005 again stopped the import of Morgan’s four-wheeled models. Despite a small number of Aero models being imported, it wasn’t until 2011 when the Morgan 3 Wheeler was launched, that Morgan was able to officially reintroduce itself. The Morgan 3 Wheeler enjoyed success in the United States throughout the 2010s, before ceasing production in 2021.
In 2023, Morgan returned to the United States with Super 3, the latest in a long line of three-wheeled Morgan sports cars. 2024 marks the return of four-wheeled Morgan sports cars to the USA after an almost 20-year absence with Plus Four. With its blend of timeless design with modern technology and captivating dynamic performance, the latest Plus Four is the purest expression of the four-wheeled Morgan sports car.
